Twitter Is NOT a Social Network After All.

twitter Is Not Social NetworkCheck out the word Tweeter on Wikipedia and you can find instantly that it is an ‘online social community.’ Drop by Tweeter itself and you observe that the company confirms, saying Tweeter allows you to “start a discussion.” And if you examine the suggestions on various public networking weblogs you will also find out that all the professionals believe the fact- Twitter is social.

Except it isn’t.

New analysis verifies what some of us have assumed for a while — Tweeter is mostly one-way. It is basically a “broadcast” method, a soapbox which gives customers a system to scream out to the globe.

The analysis comes from the extremely well known Pew Research Online Venture. Pew discovered several different groups of Tweeter community and considered the inter connectivity within each of them. Of the six different groups of customers on Tweets, only one of them has any actual level of public inter connectivity. The remaining are not truly public at all.

For illustration, many people use Tweeter to opinion on or offer political opinions of all types. Yet within this number of customers there is almost no connections. They opinion and then neglect any later efforts at discussion.

In the same way, in the assistance systems of Tweeter — such as manufacturers with client assistance programs — there is no network as such and the discussions as such are short-lived. Again, this is not really public — it is similar to contacting a organization, getting an response and then placing the cellphone down.

The most consumer use of Tweeter, with respect to this analysis, is the ‘tight crowd’ — such as individuals engaged in a particular activity or those with a interest for a topic. This tends to generate interaction and relationship — as you would anticipate in a online community.

But the other kinds of groups of individuals who are available on Tweets do not seem to be very public, when you seem at this analysis.

Yet, simultaneously, use of Tweets is continuously improving. It is an integral aspect of the Web with one in five individuals using it consistently. So it is not something that can be pushed aside, even if it is not very social.

It indicates we need to modify our mind-set and considering Tweeter. Far from seeing it as a online community, we ought to consider it as a transmitted channel. And given that so many individuals use it without connections and connection that must also mean that customers like getting those “broadcasts.”

Probably the purpose why many companies have not taken to the Tweeter stereo is because they cannot deal with having to observe and perform on all those “discussions.” Understanding that this does not seem to issue to almost all Tweeter customers, companies are now totally able to use Tweeter basically to have another speech. Connections is nice; but not necessary it seems. What is needed is having something exciting to say which other Tweeter customers want to look at.
